With a population slightly lower than 100,000, Menorca (or Minorca) is one of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Traditionally more low-key than its neighbors, Mallorca (Majorca) and Ibiza, it’s known for its endless beaches, from miles-long sandy crescents to rocky, turquoise-watered bays called “calas.”

Avarcas are traditional sandal originally developed in Menorca. The shoes are made using a leather upper and a rubber sole, originally made from a recycled car tyre. Nowadays however, the soles are made in the style of a car tyre but from a purpose-made mould.
How Avarca Pons was Born
Avarca Pons is a family-run company located in Citadel in Menorca specialising in the making of the island’s traditional footwear. From this shoemaking tradition and the savoir-faire passed down from generation to generation, we combine craftsmanship with the most innovative processes, this guarantees our avarcas are of the highest quality, following fashion trends with regards to style and colour.

All models conserve the original essence of the avarcas of Menorca: a shoe dating back over one hundred years, comfortable yet resistant, which comes from the rural world, and re-invented to become an essential summer product.

Due to the growing popularity of avarcas, there are many imitations available in the market, these have not necessarily been created following the traditional craftmanship or even in Menorca itself.

El Consell Insular de Menorca, in collaboration with the Footwear Manufacturers Association of Menorca, has created the guaranteed "Avarca de Menorca" brand to differentiate this original shoe, from the island, in the footwear market. This label ensure the quality and authenticity of the product, the materials, the
manufacturing process and their geographical origin.
A Technical Committee supervises the authorisation of the brand so that purchasers have full guarantees about the manufacture of the Menorcan Avarca. Classic avarcas model available in our website, have the guaranteed "Avarca de Menorca" brand.
